White Rock, Ko Tao, Gulf of Thailand, Thailand
August 9, 2017 | 10:31
It appears to be the beginnings of Jelly season in Koh Tao, Thailand. There had been several jellies of varying types and sizes spotted on this particular dive site, White Rock, over the last few days. I had tried to film several of the Lion's Mane Jellies (also known as the Giant Jellyfish or Hair Jelly) but they were all very close to the surface and the motion of the ocean so close to the surface was making filming steady and buoyancy a difficult combination. I had been trying to film on the surface but to no avail when I looked right below me and saw this Lion's Mane right below. It looked like it was finally at the perfect depth for capturing it beautiful movement without any other factors manipulating the movement too much. I was able to spend a good 20 minutes while it swirled around unfurling its far reaching tentacles.
We also encountered a sea snake, butterfly fish and a jelly that didn't make it being eaten by a File Fish.
One of my best dives on the island for some time. Many more to come I'm sure.
