Our Team, by using the manned submersible Curasub, facilitates the exploration of the deep reefs around Curacao & the Greater Caribbean, allowing Marine Biologists from all over the world to explore the twilight zone of the Caribbean Sea down to 1000ft (300m). This type of documented exploration & discoveries is producing dynamic results that are now being published in major scientific journals. Additionally, by monitoring the deeper reefs to find out what influence factors like climate change, acidification, pollution and invasive species have on ecosystems in greater depths, is another aspect that keeps researchers occupied with. Simultaneously they are also trying to find out in what way the deeper reefs might affect the recovery capacity of the shallow reefs. These adventures are not limited to our team or the visiting Marine Biologists. Substation Curacao, which is located inside the Curacao Sea Aquarium Park is open to the public. The deep reef research being conducted is widely available to those interested. More importantly though, you can be part of this unique expedition and learn more about the 50 + new species that have been discovered since launching the Curasub in 2000. The Curasub is a specifically designed 5-person submarine built by Nuytco Research Ltd. It is equipped with the latest technology and certified to the highest safety standards allowing Substation Curacao to offer you an experience that only rivals a journey into outer space. Turn your dreams into a reality! Become a Deep-Sea Explorer with Substation Curacao and discover the unknown depths of the Caribbean Sea! It is a bucket list experience!! Newly Named "Coral Reef Twilight Zone" Is Full of Fish Nobody Has Ever Seen ... Welcome to the rariphotic. To date, humans have explored less than five percent of the ocean. That’s less surprising when you consider that 95 percent of the livable space on Earth is in the ocean, which itself takes up 70 percent of the planet’s surface. Scientists exploring one small fraction of that livable space reported on Tuesday that they’ve discovered never-before-seen species of life lurking in the depths, as well as an entirely new ocean life zone. This new zone is newly named the “rariphotic,” and it exists between 130 to 309 meters below the surface. Smithsonian scientists identified it while exploring the reef system in the Curasub off the coast of Curaçao, a Dutch Caribbean island separated from mainland South America by a deep ocean trench. https://www.inverse.com/article/42629-rariphotic-coral-reef-twilight-zone ... Researchers name new ocean zone: The rariphotic Based on the unique fish fauna observed from a manned submersible on a southern Caribbean reef system in Curaçao, Smithsonian explorers defined a new ocean-life zone, the rariphotic, between 130 and 309 meters (about 400 to 1,000 feet) below the surface. The rariphotic occurs just below a previously defined reef zone, the mesophotic, which extends from about 40 to as deep as 150 meters (about 120-450 feet). The role of this new zone as a refuge for shallower reef fishes seeking relief from warming surface waters or deteriorating coral reefs is still unclear. 1000ft is 1000ft... The story about the cups! :) So what is the story about the cups? You might have seen this before or heard that we ask Curasub passengers to create their own cup. They can be as creative as they want and make it however they want. So what then? Well, we attach them on the outside of the Curasub and take them with us on their dive. The purpose is to demonstrate the immense pressure that is present at these extreme depths. (1 atm = 14.7psi or 1 bar) Once we're back from the dive and surface the result is amazing! The size is reduced from a coffee cup to literally a shot glass! Why... well at 1000ft or 305m, the cups are squeezed by approximately 441 psi or 30 bar of pressure! WOW... Right! Most of our passengers make these as a present for someone, their own souvenir or even as a Christmas tree ornament. NOW... Become a Deep-sea Explorer and make your very own cup! If you already have a cup, please share your story in the comments section below! ... More

Researchers from the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and the University of Washington Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture recently teamed up for their second collaborative expedition this year to study deep reefs of the Caribbean. Led by Fish Curators Carole Baldwin (Smithsonian) and Luke Tornabene (UW), members of the Deep Reef Observation Project (DROP) participated in the first-ever submersible exploration off St. Eustatius, one of six islands in the Dutch Caribbean.   https://www.chapmanexpeditions.org/expeditions-blog/statia-expedition-2017 ... Discovering New Species Through Tropical Reef Biodiversity Research Smithsonian marine biologist Carole Baldwin leads the Deep Reef Observation Project (DROP), an effort to study biodiversity—the variety of species—and monitor changes in deep tropical reefs, highly diverse but underexplored ocean ecosystems. Off the coast of Curacao in the southern Caribbean, Carole and her team of almost 40 Smithsonian researchers are uncovering a new world of biodiversity that science has largely missed. Using a manned submersible, they have discovered at least 50 new species in an area of only around 0.2 square kilometers.
